Tanja Gruber, MD, PhD is the Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine and Director of the Bass Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. She is a product of the University of Washington, with dual BS degrees in Biology and Biochemistry; University of Southern California, there with MD in Medicine and PhD in Immunology; and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for Internship and Residency in Pediatrics and then Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Gruber was recruited after fellowship to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she became a nationally and internationally recognized physician- scientist. At St. Jude she focused on high-risk leukemia and acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL). Her laboratory research has led to the identification of CBFA2T3-GLIS2, a novel fusion gene that confers a poor prognosis in pediatric AMKL, and a detailed view of the genomic landscape in MLLr leukemia.

Frontiers in Oncology: Immunotherapy for Brain Tumors

Presenter:

Michael Lim, MD

Dr. Michael Lim is Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Lim obtained his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency in Neurosurgery at Stanford and went on to become a Professor of Neurosurgery, Oncology and Radiation Oncology at Johns Hopkins before returning to Stanford. Dr. Lim’s surgical interest is in both benign and malignant brain tumors, with a particular interest in gliomas (including ependymoma), meningioma, pituitary tumors and skull base tumors. He has extensive experience in new and innovative neurosurgical techniques including image guided surgery, microsurgery, minimally invasive procedures and endoscopic surgery.

Dr. Lim’s primary research interest is developing immune-based therapies against brain tumors. His research laboratory is focused on understanding the mechanisms of immune evasion by primary brain tumors. Findings from his laboratory are directed towards translation to novel therapies against brain tumors. He currently serves as the principal investigator of several large brain tumor immunotherapy clinical trials based on findings from his laboratory.

The mission of the Stanford Center for Clinical Research (SCCR) includes offering educational resources, training, and support for investigators and research staff.  We have invited the Assistant Professor of Medicine in Oncology, Dr. Manali I. Patel, MD, to provide you with the principles of oncology and treatments. The speaker will review etiologies and determinants for disparities. She will also review research areas including delivery science and its application to care delivery for patients with oncologic diseases.

At the conclusion of this class, you will be able to:

  • Apply principles of Cancer Epidemiology
  • Examine Screening Policies and Implications for Cancer
  • Explain principles of ZNA as etiologies for disparities in cancer development and outcomes
  • Analyze barriers that lead to disparities across the cancer continuum
  • Apply strategies to overcome barriers in current cancer care delivery

Attendance is open to all research staff.

About the Instructors:

Dr. Manali I. Patel, MD, is a medical thoracic oncologist and health services researcher at the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. She obtained her MD and Masters in Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill and completed her Internal Medicine residency, fellowship in Hematology and Oncology, and Masters in Science in Health Services Research at Stanford University.  Dr. Patel’s research involves evaluating systems-level and social factors that influence disparities in cancer and value-based care delivery. Her expertise lies in designing, implementing, and evaluating new models of cancer care delivery with academic, community, and VA oncology practices aimed to improve patient experiences with care, clinical outcomes, and reduce unwanted healthcare utilization and health disparities. Dr. Patel also has expertise in linking large cancer registries to investigate modifiable etiologies for disparate care receipt among populations.
